What to Focus on to Give a Great Speech

In the powerful throwback, The Magic of Thinking Big, author David J. Schwartz, Ph.D., explores - How to Make a Good Speech?

He begins by lamenting that the reason most people are not successful in their public speaking is because they are focusing on the “small, trivial things…at the expense of the big, important things”. Small worries such as:

  • stand straight,

  • don’t move around,

  • don’t use your hands,

  • don’t let the audience see my notes,

  • don’t make mistakes,

  • don’t speak too soft…etc…

This becomes a laundry list of worries entering the arena, as opposed to having a clear focused message that is bursting to be shared. He suggests: instead of focusing on stressful minutia, get interested in this:

“Knowledge of what [you are] talking about

and an intense desire to tell it to other people.”

At Vocal Center, we are always exploring how the content and message is living inside you, and how to maximize the urgency to clearly share it with others. In a Public Speaking Coaching, we strip away any insignificant worries and get you engaged (and thus, your audience engaged) with the exciting, vivid story you have to share with the world.

As Dr. Schwartz says, “all successful public speakers have this one thing in common:

They have something to say and a burning desire for other people to hear it.
